The Borough of Juneau, Alaska wanted to provide a simple way for cemetery patrons to search cemetery records on-line and be able to see corresponding locations on a map for burials. The biggest hurdle to accomplishing this was that the mapping and record information were not digital or connected to each other. GMI helped the City by building the digital map with all known graves drawn and located. The records were converted and built into a database and then geomatched with the graves. With this information in place, GMI built a webmap using Esri’s ArcGIS Online and Enterprise Geodatabase technology. The map shows the burials and surrounding features and allows users to search for a grave by deceased name or burial year. Search results are linked directly to the map allowing patrons to find the location of a relative’s burial.
