GIS Solutions
You may have been asked, or have asked yourself, “How are we going to use GIS?” or, “Are the benefits really worth the investment?”

As you learn more about the power of GIS, you will recognize how GIS can create solutions for everyday challenges. We can help you identify and develop these solutions just as we have in the following examples:

  • Infrastructure Management
  • Emergency Operations
  • Data Collection
  • Public Safety
  • Maps
  • Cemeteries
  • School District Planning

FOR EXAMPLE...
Infrastructure Management
The City of Orem, Utah uses GIS to track the location, condition, and maintenance histories of their water and sewer utilities.
The City of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho’s Wastewater Department uses GIS as a tool to better maintain their system and respond faster to the public’s needs. These organizations and many others benefit from GIS by using it as a means to record information obtained from field crews and then making the information more readily available to others within the organization. Crews are able to respond to problems faster and more proactively maintain their utilities, all leading to significant time and dollar savings.
Emergency Operations
Brigham City, Utah uses GIS to produce disaster scenarios for their community so they can develop emergency response and evacuation plans. GIS helps them quickly evaluate the impact a certain kind of disaster might have on the population and property. This helps them to properly plan and better prepare before the disaster happens.
Public Safety
Brigham City Light and Power uses GIS to quickly identify the source of a power outage and the population impacted by the outage. If an outage occurs, they can identify, in a matter of seconds, those residents who rely on electricity for health reasons – oxygen, life support, etc. and communicate these special needs to emergency responders.
Lindon City, Utah uses GIS to reduce liability by developing an access management plan that proactively brings curb returns into ADA compliance.

Maps
Kearns Improvement District in Salt Lake County, Utah uses GIS to generate map books for their water and sewer maintenance crews. This gives their crews quick access to better data so they can be more efficient in the field.
Cemeteries
We have helped nearly 100 cemeteries accross the country use GIS to help them better manage and preserve valuable cemetery information. Vulnerable paper records are now in a digital format, which facilitates archiving. Information is more accessible, current, and accurate. Those who visit or maintain the cemetery grounds benefit greatly from this information. Also visit our new website www.namesinstone.com. This site is a receptacle of cemetery maps and records. A great service for cemeteries and genealogists.
School District Planning
The Davis County School District in Utah uses GIS to help them geographically analyze student distribution for more accurate and timely boundary change decisions. Using GIS has turned a process that took several weeks into a few minutes. Better results – faster.
Data Collection
Bingham County, Idaho integrates GIS with GPS data collection to facilitate the implementation and maintenance of an e-911 database for the entire county. Using the spatial analysis capabilities of GIS has broadened government’s understanding and use of GIS, which has led to more timely and better decision making.
